GOD OUR DEFENCE
Scripture: Psalm 59:17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.
Upon learning the meaning of defence, one understands readily why David desired to sing unto God while acknowledging Him as his strength. First, defence means a high place, refuge, secure height or retreat. It represents a stronghold or refuge of God. The meaning intensifies and the term "high" seems less adequate with a closer walk with God. The longer we walk with God the more He reveals the magnitude of our position in Him. Not only are we brought to a high place, but it is one of inaccessible height to our enemies. It is a place in God that is too high for capture. It is a place of safety and security. It is a place of rest and peace. Lastly, it means to be exalted of God. No wonder the Psalms are filled with declarations of confidence such as, "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower (Psalm 18:2). Not only is our position in God, He is our Refuge where we are safe and secure.
