CHILDREN OF SPIRIT VERSUS CHILDREN OF THE FLESH

Romans 9:8, 11-13

8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)

12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

That the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth is a Supreme fact that every believer must fully come to terms with. In light of verse 11 above, the natural mind would easily focus on why it seemed Esau was picked on versus being spiritually minded and focusing on the purpose of God.   The two brothers, Esau and Jacob, provide spiritual clarity in that the flesh is the enemy of God and cannot please Him. Esau speaks to the flesh with its carnal, temporal nature.

Esau was hated by God (Malachi 1:3).  “Hated” is also translated “enemy” in several Scriptures. Genesis 25 describes Esau as a cunning hunter, a man of the field.  Jesus taught that the field is the world. James 4:4 states that friendship of the world is enmity against God.  Esau’s name means hairy. At birth he was described as a hairy garment.  The root meaning of “hairy” is to bristle with horror. His description can be equated to a garment of fear.  The believer’s garment (mantle or covering) is Light.  Light is synonymous with Love. The same Wonderful Being is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our Eternal Covering.

Esau bears no resemblance to the Beloved only Begotten Son of God. Instead, he represents the Adamic nature, the carnal man who is bound to the world system.  His whole meaning in life is to cunningly hunt for and eat flesh. His soul demanded immediate fulfillment and lusted for red pottage or carnal,
Adamic sustenance. His birthright, which speaks to the believer’s spiritual inheritance in Christ, became totally insignificant because his soul was in control.  The elder shall serve the younger.

1 Corinthians 15:48 As [is] the earthy, such [are] they also that are earthy...”

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh...
