THE FIRST VOW (Continued)
Scripture Reading: Genesis 28:20-22
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
Lastly, Jacob asked God for raiment to put on. God provided the first raiment this side of His glory in Genesis 3:1 when he provided skins to Adam and Eve. That provision was a picture of the Sacrificial Covering that comes only from Jesus Christ our Lord. Always remember, dear reader, that our true covering is Christ and Christ alone. Matthew 6:28-30 reads, "And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?"
There is a remarkable Old Covenant witness to God’s faithfulness and ability to provide raiment and other necessities in the natural. Deuteronomy 29:5-6 reads, "And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God." Think how much more glorious His people are fully decked in Christ. The Revelation 19:8 reveals this glory like so, "And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints." That’s our Lord altogether lovely! The Designer Clothing of righteousness! Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.
